This was a great reunion. I appreciate all the planning that went into such a huge project. Those of us from out of town could see the effort as we enjoyed all the fun and the entertainment that was part of the 50th reunion program....The JukeBox Journey concert was over the top. I enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks to all the ones who had a part. I appreciate the many memories of those years and the kids we were...and the adults we became. We were truly blessed with having known some wonderful people and blessed to have lived in a truly wonderful time. Our calendar may appear to some as having 'December' looming near, yet I hear 'Younger Than Springtime' playing in my mind, and my heart rejoices in song. Mary Frances Binnicker Purcell
I am still smiling. This was my favorite reunion of all. There were many opportunities to interact with classmates. Having dinner at Johnny Harris with so many memories was a great beginning place. Thank you, Kenny, for the tour of Savannah High. I didn't even mind being crowded at Tubby's. The reunion committee was fantastic and all deserve thanks and big hugs. The only recommendation for the future would be to make it last longer.
I enjoyed the reunion very much. The only regret about the reunion was that I didn't have time to see more old friends there. I think having time on Friday to renew old acquaintances would be good. Maybe have a reception on Friday that lasts say 6pm to 9pm. That would give us a chance to see everyone. Then, we could still have the dinner/dance on Saturday but not have to worry about missing some people we would like to see.
Thanks to all of the reunion committee. You did a great job!
Thank you so much to the committee who did a remarkable and dedicated job in getting the wonderful event together. So much fun, but hardwork for the planners. I do keep up with some classmates whom I have seen over the years. Miss those who are no longer with us. I had been friends with Irvin Asher and Gae Edgerton since pre-school. In fact, I was teary as I left the moss, marshes and rivers of my childhood to drive back to the gently rolling landscape of middle GA.
I do have a few suggestions:
*Thanks go out to Moses for providing the shirts. When I put the t-shirt on to wear to the gym, I realized that Savannah was not on the shirt. If one isn't in Savannah, SHS isn't a known entity. So sad.
*The turnout was so wonderful for Tubby's but a nominal charge for the event, $1.00 to $5.00 ,would have given the committee a headcount. Glad Sat. lunch was held at a restaurant that could keep up, even if somewhat delayed.
*It would have been nice to have invited the spouses of deceased classmates. I missed seeing some of them too. Nancy Asher Bracker(Irvin's sister) lives in Savannah. I am in contact with her, and in hindsight should have invited her. I know I am considered a member of the class of '53 of Georgia Military College Prep School, and invited to all their functions. It is a nice connection. That class has provided a scholarship to the top honor graduate of the high school and an honorarium to the honor faculty member for the last seven years. There is an endowment fund, to which we contribute, for this. Just an idea, but think it should go to The Savannah School for the Arts housed in the building on Washington Avenue.
Thanks again,
Ellen Schneider Goodrich
Thanks to the committee for doing a great job, Maxine and I attended all the events except the tour of the school, wasn’t sure we would make it to town from Rincon (we stay with her parents) that early.
Johnny Harris is our favorite eating place and the play was terrific, we enjoyed everything, this was a special weekend for us as Saturday was also our 50th wedding anniversary.
As the computer person in the family I have especially enjoyed the visiting the class website, I’ve made a few new friends and feel like I’ve gotten to know others by reading about them on the site, wish my school class had done something like this website, thanks again for a job well done.
My husband Bob and I attended every event. The supper at Johnny Harris' brought back lots of memories of eating there with family and friends long ago. The food was excellent and the wait staff was exceptional. I could have used the name tags we got Saturday night to help recognize a few of my classmates who had changed a bit.
Going to the Savannah Theatre really put us in the mood to think back to our high school days. I could not believe that I still remembered the words to most of the songs. The tickets were perfect as they put us right next to good friends whom we had not seen in many years.
I was amazed at the transformation of SHS. The walls were covered in paintings and mathmetical representations in 3-D - a far cry from the drab walls of the '60's. Some of the math concepts scown were ones I did not see until college. It is great to know that SHS has great students now as well as a past students.
I had been to Tubby's Thursday night with family for shrimp so the light lunch Saturday was fine. I really appreciated the staff allowing us to spread out to talk. The place felt like home so we talked a lot longer than we might have otherwise. Again I could have used the nametags from Saturday night (with pictures), but by then I could recognize the people I found Friday night.
My husband and I took a quick trip to Tybee Saturday afternoon. We could not believe all the people and the activity!!!
Saturday night was wonderful. The food was excellent. The music was just the right mix of fast and slow songs.
Thanks to all who put in so much time and effort to make the reunion memorable.
Let me start at the ending of our reunion: At the waning hour of the Saturday night dinner and dance, a server was dancing to the beat of the music as she cleared away the last remaining glasses from the tables. She danced over to me and commented we must of have been a great class. She said she had worked many of these types of functions, but none where there was so much interaction amongst the attendees and none where everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and each other so much. I agreed we are a great class.
My sojourns to Savannah have been brief since leaving Savannah to join the Peace Corps in 1967. I’ve called my home away from home the Dominican Republic, D.C., Oregon, and Houston. I’ve been fortunate to have seen so much of our great country. I believe I have attended all of our Class Reunions save for the 45th. What set the 50th apart from the earlier reunions for me is that The Committee, by design, or by chance, selected venues that lent themselves to affording us time to visit with fellow classmates. At every turn I was delighted to have some time with people I have cherished from our school days (and earlier) in Savannah. It was a real home coming for me. Johnny Harris has a long legacy that we, our parents, and grandparents enjoyed. While the Wilmington Island Club is not the General Oglethorpe Hotel where we danced away the evening at our senior prom, it conjures up the Oglethorpe legacy for many of us. Tubby’s is new to me, but not beautiful Thunderbolt. What a stroke of genius to include the wonderful ‘Jukebox Journey’ performance at the historic Savannah Theater! Great job, Harry.
There was not a dry eye in the house as we remembered our departed classmates. They are a part of us and so long as we remember them, they live on in our hearts.
I deliberately save the tour of the halls of the SHS we knew for my closing comments. The changes from our days in those halls are evident throughout the campus. Importantly, I think our spirits and those of the great teachers who taught and inspired us are alive in those halls and in its current metamorphosis. We were a class of bright, talented, close, community aware, fun loving babes in the woods. We held high hopes for the future. From what I garnered from that tour, the current students carry that torch and spirit. I do so hope the institution continues to bloom and grow, and that the students realize all of their youthful hopes and dreams.
My dreams are alive and well.
Marty
Will the Committee please stand up and identify yourselves. Take a big bow!
Wow!! This reunion was the best ever! I dearly loved being in the old building and reliving some of our fondest and not so fond (remember the blue gym suits) memories. Also, the dinner and program at the Wilmington Island Club were outstanding. Maybe for our 55th we could have a roll call because there were a lot of faces I did not recognize after 50 years! Otherwise, our 50th was the best yet. What a great group of people; we have been so blessed. And yes, I really miss some of my close friends who have passed on ahead of me. Rick, your daughter did an outstanding tribute to them. Thanks to all of you who put this reunion together. Until next time...
